My Bird Is Not Eating β€” Causes & When to Act

Flovvi Team

Birds have extremely fast metabolisms and a refusal to eat for more than 24 hours is a medical emergency in most species.

Common causes include infection, respiratory illness, gastrointestinal obstruction, or psychological stress β€” all require prompt veterinary evaluation.

## How Long Can a Bird Go Without Eating?

Unlike dogs or cats, most birds cannot safely go without food for more than 24 hours. Small species like finches and canaries may deteriorate within 12 hours. Larger parrots have slightly more reserve, but no bird should be observed going without food for more than one day before veterinary contact is made.

## Common Causes of Appetite Loss in Birds

Bacterial or Viral Infection
Systemic infections suppress appetite rapidly. Birds with bacterial septicemia, Psittacosis (Chlamydia psittaci), or viral illness will often stop eating as one of the first visible signs.

Respiratory Disease
A bird that cannot breathe comfortably will not eat. Respiratory infections, aspergillosis, and air sac disease all reduce appetite.

Gastrointestinal Obstruction or Crop Stasis
A blocked or impacted crop causes discomfort and nausea, leading to food refusal. You may notice the crop not emptying overnight or a sour smell from the beak.

Stress and Environmental Changes
Moving to a new home, the arrival of a new pet, or a change in routine can trigger stress-induced anorexia. This is a diagnosis of exclusion β€” illness must always be ruled out first.

Nutritional Deficiency or Diet Change
Birds transitioning from seeds to pellets may temporarily reduce food intake. However, a complete food refusal even during dietary transitions requires monitoring.

## Signs That Make Appetite Loss an Emergency

Seek veterinary care immediately if food refusal is accompanied by: fluffed feathers, lethargy, tail bobbing, labored breathing, watery droppings, or a bird sitting on the cage floor.

## What You Can Do at Home (and What You Cannot)

Keep the bird warm (28–30Β°C / 82–86Β°F), offer familiar favourite foods, and minimise handling. Do not attempt force-feeding. Contact an avian vet if there is no improvement within 12 hours.

When to see a vet

See a vet immediately if your bird has not eaten for 24+ hours, appears fluffed, lethargic, or has labored breathing alongside the appetite loss.
