Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) β€” Complete Guide

Flovvi Team

Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD), caused by Beak and Feather Disease Virus (BFDV), progressively destroys feather follicles and suppresses the immune system. There is no cure; management focuses on supportive care, isolation, and preventing transmission.

## What Is PBFD and What Causes It?

PBFD is caused by a circovirus that targets rapidly dividing cells β€” including feather follicle cells and immune cells (T and B lymphocytes). Destruction of these cells causes characteristic feather abnormalities and severe immunosuppression.

## How PBFD Spreads

Direct Contact Between Birds: BFDV is shed in feather dust, feces, and crop secretions.

Fomite Transmission: The virus is extremely environmentally stable β€” it can persist on cage surfaces, food bowls, perches, and clothing for months.

Vertical Transmission (Egg to Chick): Infected hens can transmit BFDV through the egg to their offspring.

## Clinical Signs

Abnormal Feather Development: Feathers emerge with constrictions, color changes, or fail to develop entirely. Over successive moults, the bird may become progressively bare.

Beak Deformities: BFDV disrupts keratin production, causing overgrowth, delamination, and fracture of the beak.

Immunosuppression and Secondary Infections: Destruction of lymphocytes leaves affected birds unable to fight infections. Secondary bacterial, fungal, and viral infections become the primary cause of death.

## Diagnosis: PCR Testing

A PCR blood test (BFDV PCR) is the gold standard for diagnosis. Newly acquired birds should always be quarantined and tested before introduction to an existing flock.

## Management and Supportive Care

There is no curative treatment. Management involves supportive care (warmth, nutrition, treatment of secondary infections), strict hygiene to prevent spread, and regular monitoring of quality of life.

When to see a vet

Any bird showing progressive feather loss, abnormal pin feathers, or beak deformities should be PCR-tested for PBFD β€” isolate the bird from other birds immediately pending results.
